An interview with the innkeeper(s) of Cottage Farm Bed & Breakfast (25th of November 2009)
What is(are) your name(s)?
Glenys and Gerald Dixon
For how long have you been running a B&B?
Nearly 13 years, since June 1997
Please share something about the history of your present bed and breakfast.
When we bought the place it was an old farmhouse, so we converted the first floor, and changed some of the stables and barns into rooms for the B&B. It does however still look like a farm with horses in the fields, chickens in the yard and cats in the stable. Glenys was a supervisor in the housekeeping department at a Radisson-SAS hotel in Copenhagen, but we wanted to have a place of our own. Glenys' aunt had a B&B in England, and when Glenys was on school holidays and such she worked and spent time with her aunt. Gerald and Glenys are both English and wanted to introduce the concept of Bed and Breakfast here in Denmark, where it was not so well known - at least not the English way... We wanted it to be a "home from home" so that our guests could come back to a serene and friendly place after having attended their businesses - or after a hard days sightseeing, shopping or whatever - and so we chose to have it in the country.
What are the unique characteristics of your B&B?
The B&B is located in the countryside between two old villages Dragør and St. Magleby. St. Magleby (1 km) was founded by Dutch farmers in the 16th century. They were sent for by the Danish King to improve the farming skills of the Danes. The village is very well kept and one old farm was turned in to a museum of farming and lifestyle in the 16-19th century. However, most of the farms burnt down during two big fires in the 17th and 18th century and were rebuilt in the 18th century. Ours is one of these - built in 1821. It was a custom at the time for travelling artists to paint pictures on the wall in return for food and shelter. When we restored the old farm house in order to make it suitable for a B&B, we discovered a big wall painting behind layers of wallpaper (and a newspaper from 1914) in the living room. We contacted the local museum, and they sent a specialist to restore the painting. She stayed every weekend for many months - until the painting was completely restored for our guests to enjoy. It pictures the bridge of life... With only 10 km to the city of Copenhagen, 5 km from the airport and only 15 minutes from Sweden there are lots of things to see and do while staying at Cottage Farm. We are only 2 km from the local harbour and the beach, and 4 km. from the Forest and the golf course. Dragør ( 2 km ) is an old fishing-village with its old houses still maintained just as they were and with many shops and restaurants. What characterises Cottage Farm is the relaxing atmosphere and friendly surroundings. After a busy day in the hustle and bustle of of Copenhagen or attending their businesses, our guests can relax in the garden overlooking the horses grazing in the fields.
Based on your guests' opinions, what feature of your B&B has made their stay special?
Our motto is "Your home from home" and this also seems to be the experience of our guests. Our tourists are very happy about the friendliness and helpfulness they meet and appreciate our special suggestions about places to see that are a little outside the usual things in the tourist guide. As well as this businesspeople enjoy the warm homely atmosphere rather than the clinical feeling in an ordinary hotel. They also appreciate the clean and well maintained rooms and the serenity and beauty of Cottage Farm.
Please describe in short your bed and breakfast and its general services and amenities.
The main house has a dining room and a meeting room. We have a big lovely garden and a nice terrace. We have the top grading as a Bed and Breakfast.
How many rooms are offered at your B&B and what is its maximum capacity?
3 single rooms (2 with private, one with shared bathroom). 2 family rooms with 3 beds (bathroom on corridor). 4 double rooms (3 with private bathroom). 3 roomed apartment - sleeps 4 to 6 persons. All together we have 21 beds in 12 rooms.
What kinds of rooms do you offer?
The house in general is kept in a homelike country style. Some rustic rooms, and some decorated "Laura Ashley" style.
Please describe the in-room facilities for each type of room in your B&B.
Most of the rooms have separate bathroom with shower, they have TV, video, free wireless Internet, electric kettle, fridge and microwave. The family rooms, one of the single rooms and one double room shares two bathrooms and a tea-kitchen with microwave, fridge and electric kettle.
Which room is your personal favorite?
Our favourite room is a double room overlooking the horses in the field. It is very quiet and serene since there are no other rooms above or beside it. It shares a big terrace overlooking the courtyard with two other rooms. Another favourite is on the 1st floor - a double decorated Laura Ashley style - overlooking the biggest field.
What do the room rates include?
Parking, insurance, Internet, tax, all bed linens and towels - but not breakfast.
Do you offer any special packages?
We offer 7 nights for the price of 6.
What may guests expect from a typical breakfast at your property?
Breakfast buffet: We have different breads, cereals, cheese, eggs, ham, salami, tomatoes, yoghurts, jam, marmalade, tea, coffee, milk and juice. Or, by special request, a full English cooked breakfast with bacon, eggs, beans etc.
When and where is breakfast served?
Breakfast is served in the main house between 7 and 10 am. In the summer the guests can eat breakfast on the terrace overlooking the garden. If the guests prefer to eat their breakfast in private,we will bring a breakfast tray to the room. Guests who want to leave early, can have a breakfast-pack made ready for them the night before and put in the fridge.
Are dietary needs accommodated?
Our breakfast has many choices for vegetarians, but also, if you let us know your requirements, we can cater to taste...
Do you serve other meals?
No other meals served, but lunch packs can be arranged, to take with you.
Are there cooking facilities, which guests may use?
All our rooms have or have access to a fridge, electric kettle and a microwave oven. (The microwave ovens in the apartment and on the 1st floor are free to use. A private microwave in your room is 35 kr per day).
Is your bed and breakfast suitable for children?
Children are certainly welcome and there is lots of space for them to play in. It is however a farm with horses and other animals and so children should not be left unattended.
Do you accept pets?
No. Even our own dog is not allowed in the guest rooms. Occasionally guests have housed their pets in our stable - but only if you have your own pet container, as we wouldn't like to have any conflict with the horses.
What is your smoking policy?
Cottage Farm is a non-smoking B&B, but our guests are welcome to smoke outdoors, in the garden, or on the terrace.
Is there a parking facility on premises or nearby?
Our guests are welcome to park in the courtyard, and the car park at the end of our drive. There is ample space for all guests vehicles.
Is your B&B suitable for disabled guests?
To a certain degree. Many of the rooms and the dining room and meeting room in the main house are on the ground floor. Our guests can park right outside the rooms. The rooms and the main house do however have step-stones and there are cobbles in the yard that could make it difficult for a wheelchair to move around.
What safety precautions are provided at your B&B?
Smoke alarms.
What is your check-in/check-out policy?
We kindly ask our guests to check in after two p.m. and check out by 11 a.m.
Are there a minimum number of nights for staying at your B&B?
Not normally. Some of our guests - for instance guests that are here on a business trip or attending a meeting - even spends only the daytime here. We charge these guests for one night. However we ask a minimum 2 nights in peak periods.
How can guests check availability and make a reservation?
They can call Cottage Farm on the phone, they can e-mail us or make a reservation online, via our website, or another agency.
What is you cancellation policy?
We charge a deposit of the first night's room rental - refundable if cancellation is more than 14 days in advance. If the room rental is more than one week we take 10% deposit.
What types of payment do you accept?
At the moment we only accept danish credit cards, but we are working on being able to accept all of the above. We also accept different kinds of foreign currency (USD // GBP // Euro's - notes only), and payment via netbank and Paypal.
Is there a special etiquette that guests should know about and comply with?
No special code of conduct, we just want our guests to relax, and enjoy Cottage Farm, but also be mindful of our other guests.
Please tell us what things guests might enjoy visiting, seeing, doing, etc. in your area.
The old fishing village and its harbour only 2 or 3 km from Cottage Farm is well known and worth visiting. You can walk from the harbour along the beach 8 km till you reach the forest: a beautiful walk. We are 8 km from a mega shopping center Fields) and 10 km from the center of the city of Copenhagen and a lot of cultural activities and shopping. Malmø in Sweden with its many shops and lower prices than in Denmark is only 15 minutes away by car, over the longest bridge in Europe - over Øresund. There is a golf course 4 km from Cottage Farm and the local village has lots of restaurants and shops and two museums.
Where is your B&B located and how it may be reached?
FROM THE AIRPORT//OR BRIDGE FROM SWEDEN: From terminal two or three, you need to turn right (with the airport behind you) onto the dual carriageway in front of the airport. Drive through the traffic lights as far as the roundabout. // From bridge, turn left before airport. (There's a Netto supermarket, Statoil garage, and McDonalds just across from this roundabout). Take the 2nd (3rd coming from bridge) exit off the roundabout towards Dragør. You drive around the airport on the coast road (Kystvejen) until you come to the South entrance for the airport on your right hand side. Here the road does a 90 degree turn to the left, and you follow this road (A.P. Møllers Allé) about 300 metres down to T-junction, where you turn right into Nordre Dragørvej. Carry on straight along Nordre Dragørvej, even though the main road bends to the left, you actually need to indicate right and follow Nordre Dragørvej - over a couple of speed bumps in the road, then we're about 500 metres on the right side - nr. 55. FROM THE MOTORWAY (E55//E20): Towards Copenhagen, then airport. Take last exit BEFORE the airport exit towards Dragør. Turn right off the motorway and follow the road about 3 or 4 kms (Englandsvej - through about 4 traffic lights). You drive under a small tunnel for the airport runway, then you take the first left at the traffic light into Hovedgaden. Follow the road past a pond on your left and on until the road naturally turns right, into Nordre Dragørvej. We're about 500 m. on the left. A farmhouse with a sign at the drive "Cottage Farm Bed & Breakfast". (Nr. 55).
What would you say to people who have never stayed in a bed and breakfast?
A B&B is more homelike than an ordinary hotel, the rooms have the same facilities, but the B&B is more personal and able to cater for individual needs. A much cosier atmosphere, compared to quite sterile impersonal environment in an hotel.
Is there something more that you want to share about your property?
Cottage Farm is the kind of B&B where the guests keep coming back. Many stay in touch with us because of the personal and homelike relationship between guests and hosts and the homely atmosphere. But is is also a place to relax in your own company without any disturbance from us or the other guests if that's what you prefer.
