An interview with the innkeeper(s) of Chambres d'Hotes La Galerie B&B (25th of November 2008)
What is(are) your name(s)?
Sandra Jackman
For how long have you been running a B&B?
Five years
Please share something about the history of your present bed and breakfast.
When we first saw this house we knew it was the right place for us to create a wonderful B&B. As it was surrounded by beautiful Lot countryside and in a region rich in sites of historic interest and famous for its vineyards and gastronomy, and all this in one of the least populated areas in France.
What are the unique characteristics of your B&B?
Set in peaceful, tranquil countryside it is the perfect place for guests to relax. The flower gardens attract many beautiful butterflies and many species of birds and wildlife.
Based on your guests' opinions, what feature of your B&B has made their stay special?
The warm welcome we give our guests when they arrive, the excellent breakfast to get their day off to a good start, all the local regional tourist advice we offer to make each day of their visit enjoyable, a swim in the heated pool after a day of site seeing in the Lot and Dordogne. This all helps to make each day of their stay enjoyable.
Please describe in short your bed and breakfast and its general services and amenities.
The rooms are opening onto the courtyard gardens. The courtyard is in flower all year round even in winter when it is full of bright yellow pansies. The house is surrounded by two hectares of grounds. The heated swimming pool is 12 x 6 metres and salt water with outdoor shower, and surrounded by a terrace with sun loungers and parasols. To escape from the hot sun there is a garden room overlooking the swimming pool with free ADSL WiFi internet access. Also in the grounds we have recently built a floodlit boulodrome and badminton court where guests can play in the warm evenings. From our research and visits to other B&B's we don't rate the French grading system.
How many rooms are offered at your B&B and what is its maximum capacity?
We have five bedrooms, each sleeping a maximum of two guests, therefore our maximum guest capacity is 10.
What kinds of rooms do you offer?
Each of our rooms sleep one or two guests in either a large double bed 160cm or in two twin beds 90cm. All the rooms have lovely views of the courtyard and flower gardens. Each of our stylishly furnished bedrooms has a private en-suite shower room and a comfortable sitting area with armchairs. All rooms also have individual exterior garden furniture in a secluded space.
Please describe the in-room facilities for each type of room in your B&B.
All rooms are equipped with the following facilities: a shower room with basin/s and wc, towels and toiletries, hair dryer, comfortable sitting area with TV (French and English), heating, ceiling fan, tea/coffee making facilities, WiFi internet access and comfortable outside seating areas to enjoy the warm summer evenings.
Which room is your personal favorite?
All our rooms are stylishly furnished to the same high standard so as with children, we have no favourites.
What do the room rates include?
The room rates are for 1 or 2 persons per night and include breakfast.
Do you offer any special packages?
For stays of 5 nights or more we offer a discount of 7% to 10% depending on the season.
What may guests expect from a typical breakfast at your property?
We serve a continental buffet breakfast which includes bread, croissants, toast and cakes, various cereals, fruit juice and seasonal fruits of the region, jams, honey and yoghurt, charcuterie and cheese, and with this we serve coffee, hot chocolate or a selection of teas.
When and where is breakfast served?
Breakfast is served between 8:30 and 9:30 in our dining room.
Are dietary needs accommodated?
With the choice we offer at the breakfast buffet we find that all our guests are happy with the selection offered, but with any prior requests we will always do our best to accommodate special needs.
Do you serve other meals?
Very occasionally in mid season, we will serve evening meals with ruby red Cahors wines from the local vineyards. However we have four very good restaurants nearby and many more in Cahors.
Are there cooking facilities, which guests may use?
We do provide tea and coffee making facilities in each bedroom.
Is your bed and breakfast suitable for children?
No.
Do you accept pets?
No.
What is your smoking policy?
Smoking allowed outside the property only.
Is there a parking facility on premises or nearby?
Exterior parking for all our guests is in the large parking area.
Is your B&B suitable for disabled guests?
All our rooms are on ground floor level and some are without any access steps.
What safety precautions are provided at your B&B?
We have smoke alarms in all the bedrooms and the necessary security fencing for the swimming pool.
What is your check-in/check-out policy?
Arrival time is between 17:00 and 20:00 and checking out is by 10:30.
Are there a minimum number of nights for staying at your B&B?
We do have a minimum of 2 nights in mid season and a minimum of 3 nights in high season.
How can guests check availability and make a reservation?
We have a contact form on our website for guests to complete and send, or if they prefer they can e-mail, telephone or just arrive at the door.
What is you cancellation policy?
A deposit is required to confirm a reservation.
What types of payment do you accept?
We accept credit (Visa and MasterCard) and debit cards for deposits.
Is there a special etiquette that guests should know about and comply with?
We only expect guests to respect the fact that they are staying in our home and are considerate to other guests staying with us.
Please tell us what things guests might enjoy visiting, seeing, doing, etc. in your area.
Historic sites; villages and towns, bastide towns, caves and grottoes, chateaux, museums, gardens and vineyards. Festivals, markets and fabulous restaurants. Leisure parks, rambling, canoeing, fishing, horse riding, cycling and mountain-biking, climbing, golf, aerial activities and hot air ballooning. Specific places of interest: Rocamadour, Cahors and the Pont Valentre, Sarlat and Saint Cirq-Lapopie.
Where is your B&B located and how it may be reached?
We are just outside the village of Catus, about 15 km from Cahors. (Auto route A20 jct 57) From Catus village: direction Prayssac, turn right before the lake direction Cazals, then first left direction Lherm. La Galerie is 200 mts on the left. We also have a local map on our website.
What would you say to people who have never stayed in a bed and breakfast?
Similar to a hotel but a lot more friendly.
Is there something more that you want to share about your property?
We have stayed in many B&B's in the past and from our experience sometimes there were a few things missing. So we do our best to offer our guests a combination of home comforts and luxuries that we would want to find in a B&B ourselves.
