An interview with the innkeeper(s) of Zororo Bed & Breakfast (30th of January 2009)
What is(are) your name(s)?
Kevin and Tanaka Grant
For how long have you been running a B&B?
Four years
Please share something about the history of your present bed and breakfast.
The Zororo Retreat is our first venture in the accommodation industry. We liked to visit the beautiful, unspoilt countryside that Portugal's central region has to offer but were often disappointed with the limited choice of places to stay, which tended to be designed on a cost rather than quality basis. Sensing an opportunity to provide something special for the discerning traveller, we spent sometime in considering what we ourselves would like to see and have available to us...the results were put into Zororo's design package.
What are the unique characteristics of your B&B?
The Zororo retreat aims to provide a combination of characteristics which encourage our guests to feel relaxed, welcome and at their ease....we do not stand on formality, and try to be as flexible and accommodating as possible for the benefit of our visitors. A frequent comment is that staying with us is just like being welcomed into someone's home as friends rather than paying guests.
Based on your guests' opinions, what feature of your B&B has made their stay special?
Something that stands out in my mind is the comment made by the wife of a businessman who stayed for a week last Summer (2008), who said that this was the first holiday she had ever seen her husband relaxed enough to actually read a book, and what's more he finished three during his stay. Normally, she said, he spent most of his holidays just getting de-stressed enough to start a book, let along finish one!
Please describe in short your bed and breakfast and its general services and amenities.
Within the building Zororo offers guests the use of two lounges to relax in, each with TV's, UK satellite channels, a DVD and video centre and CD/radio, a games room with a pool table, table football, small library and games, plus a kitchen/eating area. Outside we have our 11.5 metre pool (new last year) with large mosaic sun terrace, loungers, umbrellas and towels. Next to our vineyard there is a full size hard surface tennis court (rackets/balls provided). Also available are 3 mountain bikes for our guests to explore the area.
How many rooms are offered at your B&B and what is its maximum capacity?
We have 5 double bedrooms in total, accommodating up to 10 guests. In addition we have three single foldaway beds that may be used in the three largest rooms. All are en-suite with baths and/or showers, and all are centrally heated should it turn chilly!
What kinds of rooms do you offer?
All of Zororo's bedrooms are individually decorated and styled. On our website there is a 'walking' video tour and photo gallery which includes images of each.
Please describe the in-room facilities for each type of room in your B&B.
All the bathrooms feature bidets and either/or both showers and tubs. Air-conditioning and central heating are available in each, as are a balcony and fitted wardrobes. The floors are solid hardwood in the bedrooms, marble in the bathrooms.
Which room is your personal favorite?
The bedroom we have named Serra has the benefit of a large corner bath (big enough for two I can assure you!) and marginally the largest floor area.
What do the room rates include?
Our prices include breakfast and all the facilities mentioned above, evening drinks, afternoon tea/coffee, use of the bikes, towels for the pool, rackets for tennis, etc.On several evenings a week we offer guests the option of an evening meal, normally three courses or a BBQ.
What may guests expect from a typical breakfast at your property?
Our continental breakfasts would normally include toast made from locally baked rustic loaves, cold meats and cheese, home made jams and Serra Lousa honey, cereals, yogurts, a choice of tea and coffee, plus fruit juice and fruit.
When and where is breakfast served?
Breakfast times are flexible...we let our guests choose when ever we can. Normally it is taken in the dinning room, but if weather allows we have used the outdoors seating area by the pool/BBQ.
Are dietary needs accommodated?
Most requirements can be satisfied as long as guests can provide us with a little notice and detailed descriptions of what they need.
Do you serve other meals?
An evening meal, home cooked, is available on many nights depending upon demand and numbers. A days notice is requested and any preferences noted.
Are there cooking facilities, which guests may use?
There is a large self-contained kitchen for guests use which includes a hob (gas), bread oven, microwave, dishwasher, fridge/freezer and the normal compliment of accessories (cutlery and crockery, etc). Tea and coffee making equipment as well!
Is your bed and breakfast suitable for children?
Zororo is an adult only retreat....minimum age 16 yo.
Do you accept pets?
We can accept small well behaved dogs which can be housed with our own in a fenced area within the gardens.
What is your smoking policy?
Smoking is allowed outside the building but not on the balconies.
Is there a parking facility on premises or nearby?
Secure parking facilities, both covered and open, is available.
Is your B&B suitable for disabled guests?
Zororo have no specific facilities for disabled guests .
What safety precautions are provided at your B&B?
Smoke alarms (6) are fitted to all floors. We have a burglar alarm and high security doors.
What is your check-in/check-out policy?
Check in and out times are flexible.
Are there a minimum number of nights for staying at your B&B?
In our high season (July and August) we have a three night minimum. Outside that period it is normally two nights, but there is some flexibility for multiroom bookings.
How can guests check availability and make a reservation?
There is a simple booking form on our website, which also contains facilities to contact us via email and phone.
What is you cancellation policy?
See' T and C' section on the website for full details.
What types of payment do you accept?
Wire transfers, personal cheques (allowing time for bank clearance) and cash
Is there a special etiquette that guests should know about and comply with?
Only to relax!
Please tell us what things guests might enjoy visiting, seeing, doing, etc. in your area.
Each room has a folder covering the variety of places to visit divided into travelling times.
Where is your B&B located and how it may be reached?
What would you say to people who have never stayed in a bed and breakfast?
All the benefits of a hotel but like staying with friends!
