An interview with the innkeeper(s) of Twin Oaks Bed & Breakfast (17th of July 2009)
What is(are) your name(s)?
Gerard Glynn
For how long have you been running a B&B?
We have been in business since 1995
Please share something about the history of your present bed and breakfast.
My name is Gerard Glynn and my wife's name is Mary Glynn. When we were younger we always wanted to travel and see the world for our selves. This has not been possible to the extent that we would have wished. We raised 4 children and this meant we were very busy with family life, and earning our living. In 1995 we decided to supplement our income by opening our bed and breakfast business, and also this would give us the chance to meet people from all over the world, so if we could not go and see the world perhaps the world would come to see us, and all of us could share the experience. We both have our careers outside our home. Mary as a pre-school teacher, and I as a painter and decorator in self employment. In the high season we are kept very busy with all we have to do but we both enjoy it and we have met some wonderful and interesting people. We still have two of our children at home, well one is in college, so life is very full at this time in our lives. We operate the bed and breakfast ourselves along with a little help from our children. We would like to welcome all people to come to Ireland and perhaps when in Ireland to come and visit us. We will do all that is possible to make the stay with us a pleasant and happy one. Our best wishes to everyone.
What are the unique characteristics of your B&B?
We live in the countryside away from heavy road traffic. The air is fresh and healthy and a good sleep is assured.
Based on your guests' opinions, what feature of your B&B has made their stay special?
Our guests have complimented us on our friendliness and helpfulness. The cleanliness of our home is a priority and has been commented upon very favourably by many of our guests. Mary is a very good cook and offers a varied and appetizing breakfast, I can guarantee you will not leave the breakfast table hungry.
How many rooms are offered at your B&B and what is its maximum capacity?
At Twin Oaks Bed & Breakfast we have 4 rooms for accommodation - a tripe en-suite room, a double en-suite room, and two double standard rooms. Our maximum capacity is 9 guests. There is a possibility for two more beds (fold ups) and a cot is available for
Which room is your personal favorite?
I like all of our home.
What do the room rates include?
Room rate includes breakfast, free coffee and tea in our guest lounge, parking, internet (with guests laptop), small fee for use of house computer depending on time used.
Do you offer any special packages?

We will accommodate vegans and vegetarians with prior notice.
Do you serve other meals?
We will provide sandwiches for people who are very late arriving or who are going on picnics the next day if they are staying for more than one night.

Is your bed and breakfast suitable for children?
We accept all children of course.
Do you accept pets?
We accept house trained pets.
What is your smoking policy?
We do not allow smoking in our house, but smokers may sit outside and smoke.
Is there a parking facility on premises or nearby?

We have no requirements with regard to the number of nights people stay.
How can guests check availability and make a reservation?
We may be contacted through the internet using e-mail. Also if it is not costly by phone.
What is you cancellation policy?
Generally we have a 24 hour cancellation policy. After this time we expect full payment except where there are extraordinary circumstances, for example death of a family member or friend, accidents or mishaps, flight delays, strikes, etc.
What types of payment do you accept?
We accept cash only. Payment should be made after viewing the accommodation.
Is there a special etiquette that guests should know about and comply with?
We do not have a code of dress for our guests. However we do like people to treat our home with respect. It has been our experience that a minority of people take alcohol to excess and we have been left to clean up the mess they leave because of their excess drinking. Using our towels to clean off make up is also frowned upon, as we supply pads for the purpose. Finally nonpaying or one night friendships are not welcome in our home.
Please tell us what things guests might enjoy visiting, seeing, doing, etc. in your area.
The city of Kilkenny is the big attraction. It is a very historical city. Kilkenny Castle is the no.1 attraction and there are a number of very interesting buildings to view, e.g. Rothe House, St Canices Cathedral, The Black Abbey. Travel in the hinterland of Kilkenny and you will find round towers and ruins of buildings a thousand years old, e.g. Jerpoint Abbey in Thomastown.
Where is your B&B located and how it may be reached?
We are situated south of the city of Kilkenny on the R697 or Kells Rd and 4 km from the city. Details are on our website.
What would you say to people who have never stayed in a bed and breakfast?
It is important to remember that in the vast majority of cases the bed and breakfast is also the home of the owners, and they are happy to share their home with their guests, so respect and consideration for the owners always appreciated. Generally guests dine in one room at their appointed time. All en-suite rooms have private bathrooms. Our two standard rooms have bathrooms outside their rooms but they are private and strictly for their rooms.
Is there something more that you want to share about your property?
Bed and Breakfast is excellent value for money and the owners are generally very helpful people who genuinely care about their guests and people will find that the owners will do everything they can to be of assistance. Irish people are very friendly and they enjoy meeting and talking to people no matter where they come from.
