For how long have you been running a B&B?
Since 2003
Please share something about the history of your present bed and breakfast.
Podere La Marronaia is a small family-run agricultural farm set in the wonderful scenery of San Gimignano landscape. In 2000 due to a strong desire of changing and looking for a bigger house for our family, we ran into this enchanting Podere consisting of an old house and lands cultivated with olives and grapes. We all immediately fell in love with this place and each one of us has been directly involved in the renovation of the house and the begging of our new business. In this "each" is included also Dino, our oldest dog (Pastore Bergamasco, an Italian breed), that arrived in our family the day later we signed the purchase of La Marronaia. He strictly followed Luigi everyday here in the new property and supervised all the works. Our family moved here on December 14, 2002 after a renovation work of about 1 year and a half. Being here we improved our little zoo and now we have 2 other dogs, LillaCamomilla and Togo; about 10 cats; two horses, Gioioso and Gastone; a Miccio Amiatino, a special breed of donkey found on Monte Amiata, called Fringuello; a small Tibetian goat called Mina, five cashmere goats, two parrots and two little Indian pigs… Today our farm is involved in different activities, partly born for passion part due to the case: organic wine and extra virgin olive oil production, flat renting and the cashmere goats breeding.
What are the unique characteristics of your B&B?
From our garden a 360°view goes from the Central Apenines to San Gimignano towers and the Chainti hill.
Even if only 2 kms far from the town centre, Podere la Marronaia, is a place where you'll find absolute silence and calmness. You'll enjoy the view of our vineyards and olive yards, the swimming pool, the friendship of our animals and the contact with nature. The part of the house that mostly attracted us was surely the central one, the old watching tower. After few researches made in the historical archives of the town, we realized that our tower was part of a larger group built for the defence of the town in 1200 d.c. At that time the property was named "Magronaja". Later it lost the defense priority and became an agricultural land, owned by rich families such as Chiarenti e Ficarelli. Here they mostly grown wheat and onions and was considered as a good dowry for the young women. In XIX century "La Marronaia" was part of the properties of San Gerolamo Monastery and later in XXI century of private owners. The building is named among the "most important historical building of the town" and to restore it has been as an everyday discovery of our past. The particular structure of our house, allowed us to dedicate the lower part of the building to our agritourism activity with flats to rent.
Based on your guests' opinions, what feature of your B&B has made their stay special?
The family running allows us to have a direct and daily contact with our guests that most of the time become our friends. Podere la Marronaia is a small farmhouse so never too crowded.
