An interview with the innkeeper(s) of Evelina Bed & Breakfast (20th of September 2009)
What is(are) your name(s)?
Anna P. Paolinelli
For how long have you been running a B&B?
For an year and a half
Please share something about the history of your present bed and breakfast.
I'm Irish born Italian and my husband "Dessie" is Irish. It was our wish for a long time to open a B&B of our own and after years searching we found what we think is the perfect place in the historical centre of Lucca.
What are the unique characteristics of your B&B?
We are centrally located, just off the main shopping street and within walking distance of everything of interest inside Lucca. To the rear of the B&B, where 4 of our rooms face, we have a unique view of the 14th century "clock Tower" and the even more infamous "Giunigi Tower" (last of the great family towers surviving in Lucca).
Based on your guests' opinions, what feature of your B&B has made their stay special?
Our many and varied guests from all parts of the world have found the B&B delightful in its ambiance and decor which we have styled very much on my grandmother's home. (She lived in one of the small villages surrounding Lucca). Some comments from our guests have been: a home from home, great hospitality, warm welcome, helpful with information (places to visit and places to eat etc.). And because we live here and we speak English and Italian, we are very available to our guests and do our utmost to make their stay here as pleasant and informed as possible, without, we hope, being intrusive.
Please describe in short your bed and breakfast and its general services and amenities.
There are 5 large bedrooms, with restored antique furniture, 4 of which overlook a garden where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the 14th century Clock Tower. The structure has 2 king-size bedrooms, 1 triple bedroom (a king-size bed + a single bed), and 2 single bedrooms with French beds. The rooms are served by 3 bathrooms with showers and hairdryers are available on request. There is a living room with a well-stocked book-case for reading and relaxing. Access to internet with your computer is available with our Wi-Fi connection. Breakfast is served in 2 nearby bars. We will be happy to welcome you and offer you the same typical Italian atmosphere that I experienced when I came from Ireland on holiday to visit my grandmother "Evelina".
How many rooms are offered at your B&B and what is its maximum capacity?
There are: 2 double rooms with double king-size beds (2x2); 1 triple room with a king-size and single bed (3); 2 single rooms with French size beds (1x1), 2 fold-out extra beds are available for the 2 double rooms. Max. capacity 9 people.
What kinds of rooms do you offer?
The rooms are number from 1 to 5. Each room has been restored furniture including a characteristic antique washbasin stand. We have tried to create an similar ambiance to my grandmother's home with regards to the general feel and in some of the smaller details: the exposed wiring and the old fashioned light switches. The rooms have also been organically painted to "breathe" naturally and ensure a good night's sleep.
Please describe the in-room facilities for each type of room in your B&B.
The rooms have central heating and fans are provided for the summer months. Access to WI-FI broadband service using your own computer (from any area of the B&B).
Which room is your personal favorite?
We love all our rooms as they are all different.
What do the room rates include?
Breakfast, Wi-Fi broadband service, bed linen, towels, shampoo and soap. Hairdryers are available on request.
Do you offer any special packages?
What may guests expect from a typical breakfast at your property?
Breakfast is served in 2 nearby cafes. Guests have a choice of something to eat and drink.
When and where is breakfast served?
In 2 nearby cafes so guests can have their breakfast at their own convenience.
Are dietary needs accommodated?
It depends.
Do you serve other meals?
Are there cooking facilities, which guests may use?
Is your bed and breakfast suitable for children?
Do you accept pets?
It depends. We can accept small size pets in low season.
What is your smoking policy?
The B&B is strictly non-smoking. There is a veranda available for smokers.
Is there a parking facility on premises or nearby?
There is one paying car parking within the historic walls of Lucca and one free parking outside the historic walls of Lucca. Both are 10-15 min. walking distance to the B&B. Parking is not included in the room rates.
Is your B&B suitable for disabled guests?
What safety precautions are provided at your B&B?
Fire extinguishers.
What is your check-in/check-out policy?
Check-in from 2.30 pm and preferably before 7.30 pm (morning arrivals may leave their luggage). Late arrivals (in Pisa airport) must be arranged with our taxi service. Closed for lunch 12.30-2.30 pm.
Are there a minimum number of nights for staying at your B&B?
How can guests check availability and make a reservation?
Email, phone and online is fine.
What is you cancellation policy?
It depends on the booking. Although generally we do not apply cancellation fees.
What types of payment do you accept?
We do not accept credit or any other cards. We only accept cash.
Is there a special etiquette that guests should know about and comply with?
Please tell us what things guests might enjoy visiting, seeing, doing, etc. in your area.
Important tourist attractions like the Amphitheatre square, the Guinigi Tower with its hanging garden. The famous churches, the composer Puccini's birthplace, museums and the spectacular 15th century walls that surround the city. Some important events: Lucca Summer festival (during the month of July) featuring world famous artistes in concert. Settembre Lucchese - a festive month in Lucca featuring the most important religious celebration of the year on the 13th night, when the "Volto Santo of Lucca" (the Sacred Visage) is paraded through the streets which are spectacularly lit up with candles.
Where is your B&B located and how it may be reached?
We are situated in the historical centre, a convenient distance from the train and bus stations. Pisa airport is not more than 40 mins drive away. Florence can be reached within the hour by "DD" bus service.
What would you say to people who have never stayed in a bed and breakfast?
To realize the fact that a genuine B&B is someone's home with rooms let out and NOT a private hotel. There is no night desk or night porter. However we are quite happy to meet with people and walk them to our B&B and help with their luggage etc.
