An interview with the innkeeper(s) of Quinta do Scoto Bed & Breakfast (26th of March 2010)
What is(are) your name(s)?
Tony, Penny and Charlotte
For how long have you been running a B&B?
2 years following a 2 year restoration.
Please share something about the history of your present bed and breakfast.
Quinta do Scoto was built in 1746 for the Marquis de Pombal's chaplain and has been a residence for many of the Portuguese Aristocracy. When we bought the Quinta in 2006, it hadn't been lived in for over 25 years when it was last owned by a Doctor and was in a derelict condition requiring extensive restoration which recovered all the original features of what is now part of Portuguese heritage. The walls are constructed of stone 60cm thick which makes the property cool in the summer and has many stone features including large stone door surrounds and window seats. Original typical Portuguese blue tiles are found in all the ground floor rooms of the Manor House, and in the Dining Room they are picture tiles that reflect many of the scenes around the Quinta from the time it was built. Much of the furniture in the House was originally made specifically for the Quinta and has been restored to its original condition. There are extensive grounds extending to over 30,000m2 with an Aquaduct, a Donkey Run, (originally used for raising water from a well), irrigation tanks and many stone tables set around the grounds. Napolian's Army camped at the Quinta when France invaded Portugal, attracted by the extensive water supplies. Six of the eight the Suites are located in the renovated Celeiro, (Barn) which naturally provides extensive and quality space with the 1st floor suites overlooking the pool area and the paddock and the ground floor suites opening directly out onto a sun terrace and salt water swimming pool. The Manor House has two further suites, one in the Adega which has a Courtyard-style bathroom with a large bath and shower formed within the original wine press. The other is on the 1st floor in the House.
What are the unique characteristics of your B&B?
Quinta do Scoto is a very different concept in B&B with spacious and luxury one and two bedroom suites, all with ensuite bathrooms with full baths and showers, furnished with Portuguese Antiques and most accommodating up to 6 guests providing not only a relaxing setting for couples but also for larger families. Some of the suites are linked and can provide further flexibility. Suites have heating and ceiling fans which are rarely used because of the comfortable temperatures in the heat of the summer due to the thick stone walls. All within a rural setting with local restaurants, cafes, shops and railways station within walking distance.
Based on your guests' opinions, what feature of your B&B has made their stay special?
We have a very relaxed style and are guests are treated as friends which is foremost in our guests comments in the survey we ask guest to complete. They just love the spaciousness and high quality furnishings in our suites and the many things that are provided on a complimentary basis and which they are used to paying for elsewhere. Relaxation and friendly respect set in a typical Portuguese environment. Whether stays are for Romantic couples or Families with children we have never had a negative view about the Quinta.
Please describe in short your bed and breakfast and its general services and amenities.
Our philosophy for our B&B was to provide the many things that we expected our guests to like and which we appreciated from the many places we had stayed at around the world. We ask all our guests what they like best and what could be improved upon and, in the few instances where new ideas are suggested, we are usually able to implement these. When we originally set about the renovation, we insisted that we would provide fewer suites of a larger size rather than cram many more in as our advisers suggested, since we wanted our guests to be impressed and to consider that we are one of the best places to stay. Guest facilities include an Entrada and Dininig Room where guests have breakfast or where they can enjoy their own meals at other times of the day. There is a guest lounge with a DVD player and Screen and a antique Billiard Table (in restoration). We do not have television in the Quinta but guests can use their own laptops or have the use of one of our laptops for watching online, DVDs or accessing their e-mails, with in-suite Wi-Fi access. Outside there are plenty of sunbeds and table and chairs around the large pool and stone tables elsewhere. There is a BBQ with plates and utensils, and a washing up area. Whilst we are awaiting official grading, Guest reviews posted on TripAdvisor give a 5* rating, where we are currently rated the 2nd best B&B in the Lisbon and Coastal Area. At the end of 2009, we were rated there as 2nd in the whole of Portugal.
How many rooms are offered at your B&B and what is its maximum capacity?
We have eight suites in total comprising one and two bedroom suites accommodating a maximum of 4 up to 6 guests. The whole property is available to rent for large groups, celebrations and corporate events accommodating a maximum of up to 48 guests.
What kinds of rooms do you offer?

All suites have ceiling fans and because of the thick stone walls, air conditioning has not been necessary to supplement the cool temperatures.
