An interview with the innkeeper(s) of La Holandesa Bed & Breakfast (06th of April 2010)
What is(are) your name(s)?
Fernando and Tea Lichtenberg-Weima
For how long have you been running a B&B?
We started our B&B in June 2009
Please share something about the history of your present bed and breakfast.
While living in Holland we used to visit B&B's on our holidays, so we decided when we went to live in Uruguay to start one there. The B&B is actually in a wooden garden house and it is built for this purpose. The idea is to receive guests who will enjoy the beautiful place where we live.
What are the unique characteristics of your B&B?
Our B&B is special because it is situated in a garden with magnificent views all around. The Departamento of Maldonado is a coastal province with hilly hinterland. So there are many diverse landscapes to enjoy. It is very quiet and peaceful and not too far from the mundane world. The guests can hike, swim in the stream, go horse riding, mountain biking and do birdwatching.
Based on your guests' opinions, what feature of your B&B has made their stay special?
Our guests were impressed with the nature around the garden house, the comfort and the company.
Please describe in short your bed and breakfast and its general services and amenities.
The garden house is entirely made of wood and consists of a sitting room/kitchenette, twin bedroom with the possibility of adding one bed in the bedroom and one in the sitting room, a bathroom with basin, wc and shower. It has a very spacious deck with comfortable chairs. The house is equipped with its own warm water system, minibar and coffee/tea making facilities. The windows have shutters. As there is always a breeze there is no need for air-conditioning and as there is a beautiful view there is no TV.
How many rooms are offered at your B&B and what is its maximum capacity?
There is a sitting room (possibility for one extra bed), one twin bedroom (possibility for one extra bed) and a bathroom. Total capacity 4 persons. In extreme cases there is a possibility of a double bedroom in the main house with separate bathroom.
What kinds of rooms do you offer?
There is only one bedroom, very cosy with plenty of cupboards and a great view.
Please describe the in-room facilities for each type of room in your B&B.
The bedroom has two beds with bed linen, cupboards. The bathroom facilities are complete including towels. The cozy sitting room also with a beautiful view has a bookcase with information for the guests, tea and coffee making facilities, electrical heating or a ventilator when necessary. Guests may ask for ironing facilities from the main house.
Which room is your personal favorite?
The whole garden house is our favorite. Nearby there are pine trees which makes one believe to hear the sea. And there are birds all around. Sometimes even armadillo and black tagu come by and at night the skunk may pass through the garden.
What do the room rates include?
The room price includes breakfast. Parking is next to the garden house.
Do you offer any special packages?
There are no special packages, we can always advise the guests what to do or organize.
What may guests expect from a typical breakfast at your property?
Our breakfast consists of home-baked bread, pan de campo, media lunas (little croissants) home made jams/marmalade, coffee or tea, fresh orange juice, honey, two types of cheese and cream cheese.
When and where is breakfast served?
The breakfast is served at the time indicated by the guests and either in the sitting room, the deck or in the garden
Are dietary needs accommodated?
We cater for vegetarians on prior request.
Do you serve other meals?
Are there cooking facilities, which guests may use?
There are tea and coffee making facilities, no cooking facilities and a fridge for the guests use only.
Is your bed and breakfast suitable for children?
The property is suitable for children.
Do you accept pets?
Guests may bring pets if not too ferocious because there is a dog on the premises and there are horses on our land and cows and sheep on the land around.
What is your smoking policy?
The property is non-smoking but outside smoking is possible.
Is there a parking facility on premises or nearby?
Cars are parked next to the garden house.
Is your B&B suitable for disabled guests?
The garden house is all ground floor and spacious but is not specifically built for disabled guests.
What safety precautions are provided at your B&B?
No alarms as it is on the land.
What is your check-in/check-out policy?
The check in time is from 16.00 hrs onwards and check-out before 11.00 hrs. But it is flexible.
Are there a minimum number of nights for staying at your B&B?
Guests can stay as long or short as they like, for longer stays discounts possible.
How can guests check availability and make a reservation?
Guests can reach us by telephone or by email. We are not 24 hrs online but will answer as soon as possible.
What is you cancellation policy?

What types of payment do you accept?
We only accept cash payment.
Please tell us what things guests might enjoy visiting, seeing, doing, etc. in your area.
Guests can rest, enjoy the scenery and when rested observe the birds, butterflies and animals that may come by. In the nearby village of Pueblo Eden there is a restaurant and you can climb up to a mirador. Appr. 500 mtrs from the B&B there is a lovely stream with crystal clear water from the hills where you can bath and observe the kingfisher and with luck see an otter or capibara. Also there are possibilities of horse riding. If you bring your own mountain bike, there are plenty of tracks! More to the north is the city of Minas with Salus park (mineral water) Parque UTE (vacationpark with swimming pools) Gruta of Arequipa with bats, Cascada del Penitente (waterfall) "Hilo dela Vida" (indian offering altars) This whole region has a very high energetic value, which is recognized by the Reiki people. Even the Tibethan priests have founded a monastery in these hills. To the west is the Sierra de las Animas range with the "Pozos Azules" (waterholes) a very nice hike. In this region on the weekends some of the inhabitants show and sell their products (from cheese to works of art) Further south you can visit the beaches: Piriapolis with Castillo Piria ands the nature zoological reserve. Or climb Pan de Azucar. Beautiful beaches from Piriapolis via Punta Colorada, Solanas to Punta del Este and Jose Ignacio. In Punta Ballena is the Casapueblo, the studio and museum of Paez Villaro. Punta del Este has all the amenities of a mundane bathing resorts with day and nightlife. A beautiful museum of South American Art: Muso Ralli and more to the east the Fundacion Pablo Atchugarry with sculptures. Information can be obtained in the B&B
Where is your B&B located and how it may be reached?
The B&B is situated in the Dep. of Maldonado. The address is: Ruta 12, km 26.500. You can reach the Ruta 12 from the Interbalnearia in Solanas (starts at the ANCAP fuelstation) or via the Ruta 9, turning North at km 127. Follow the Ruta 12 till km 26.500. At the right hand side is a bus stop (sign B&B La Holandesa)and turn into the dirt road. Follow this road till the ruined house, to the right is a gate (to be opened and closed) and follow the dirt road till the last house.
What would you say to people who have never stayed in a bed and breakfast?
Come and try it! You have the garden house to yourself so you do not have to bother about other guests.
Is there something more that you want to share about your property?
If you are stressed from your hectic life, come and relax and enjoy nature!
