An interview with the innkeeper(s) of Casa Nicolar Bed & Breakfast (23rd of March 2011)
What is(are) your name(s)?
Katherine Johnson
For how long have you been running a B&B?
20 years
Please share something about the history of your present bed and breakfast.
This 100+ year old building was converted 'cosmetically' by ourselves in 1988 by adding a third floor followed by attempts at modern plumbing & by installation of en-suite showers & loos to each of five bedrooms. The earlier building had been originally constructed, at the beginning of the last century, as a depository for local crops and for wine-making. It was used subsequently as a school,a private house, and, later, before we moved in, it housed the village forge. The older houses in this village tell their own tale. They are all derived from dry stone walls which were man-made by heaving large, heavy piedras (rocks!) and mud. The load-bearing walls are strong & very thick, that is 2 to 3 ft. in width & the construction is of 4 walls around a central core. The intial layout is similar to that of houses in northern Morocco while the very few oldest, single story, buildings that remain here are reminiscent of the Berber villages. These houses provided shelter and a store. The antecedents must have understood the value of a rewarding diet given the availability of grapes, almonds, figs, honey, fruit & vegetables and meat & fish. Most households maintained a bread oven and families made their own wine!
What are the unique characteristics of your B&B?
This village is unique in that it was a centre for wine-making. Along with neighbouring villages, Sorvilan & Rubite, it comprises an ancient strip of development adjacent to a fertile agricutural strip of land. This is part of the Contraviesa which are the foothills to their grander partners - the Sierra Nevada. Here you will find a relatively small population following in the footsteps, as closely as modernity allows (!), of their forefathers. They are the true Alpujarrenos - and we (the foreigners) are, as newcomers, flattered (flattened?) to be here We may be termed 'forresteros' - on a 'good' day ! At given times of year, & on agreement, you might be able to plait garlic, dry peppers & figs, pick grapes, make jam, learn to make authentic dolce & tortilla, paint & repair houses, chat in the plaza, water the mule and walk the dog. Or, boringly, you can watch TV, surf the net, write a novel, paint a masterpiece etc. etc. . . . . . .
Based on your guests' opinions, what feature of your B&B has made their stay special?
Well, - you're right . . . it's different ! . . . . Do we have to walk to La Mamola? Let's have lunch at 'the deserted village'! Why does Gregorio's wine taste . . . . . ? What time does the breadman get here ? (see also for fish, greengrocer, household goods, clothes . . . .) Is the doctor really here everyday ? What day(s) are the markets at Orgiva/Cadiar/La Mamola/Motril/Almunecar/Salobrena/Adra .. . . ? When can I get a taxi to . . . . . ? Will you teach me to play boule?
