An interview with the innkeeper(s) of DownHome Bed & Breakfast (26th of May 2011)
What is(are) your name(s)?
Sandy and James Down
For how long have you been running a B&B?
Since 2005
Please share something about the history of your present bed and breakfast.
Niagara on the Lake is a historic town dating back to the late 1700's when it was populated by United Empire Loyalists. i worked in Niagara on the Lake for 30 some years before retiring and starting a bed and breakfast in 2005. We spent three months renovating the bed and breakfast and had our first guests in May of that year . It seemed appropriate to have our bed and breakfast in Niagara on the Lake. My great great ancestor was a colonel in the British army, here in Niagara, during the war of 1812. His musket has been passed down in the family from then. The musket is not British. It is US and was manufactured in 1808 at Harpers Ferry. So it's back to its roots here as well. Sandy has put in all the gardens, paths, pond and waterfall. A major undertaking as there was nothing to start with. Our guests can relax in her created garden oasis. We have been on the Niagara Horticultural garden tour as the garden Sandy created is a walking garden with paths. No grass to cut.
What are the unique characteristics of your B&B?
We are a short stroll to the main business district. No need to try and find parking downtown. We are in a quiet area where guests can relax on our deck or the garden oasis next to the pond with waterfall. All of our rooms have a queen sized pillow top mattress bed for that great sleep experience. Some of guests have whispered to us that if we would look the other way, they might take the mattress with them. We are the only bed and breakfast in Niagara that Ozoneates our rooms between guests for that extra measure of clean. We also offer packages with our rooms that include three fine dining packages, three wine tours, two golf packages and a romance package.
Based on your guests' opinions, what feature of your B&B has made their stay special?
Please describe in short your bed and breakfast and its general services and amenities.
DownHome Bed and Breakfast backs onto a treed ravine lot overlooking One Mile Creek. Beautifully landscaped, the gardens include a corkscrew willow tree, sitting areas overlooking our pond with waterfall. Our three distinct bedrooms offer the comfort of pillow top mattress queen size beds with sitting area, a mini refrigerator and a four piece en-suite bath with bathrobes. Breakfast is a gourmet event in the morning with a full three course breakfast including locally grown fresh fruit starter (in season) main course and a decadent desert finish. Our guest lounge is available to our guests anytime and has a coffee/tea station with cookies and chocolates. Books and games are available from the library and during the winter our guests can read a book next to wood burning fireplace in the lounge.
How many rooms are offered at your B&B and what is its maximum capacity?
DownHome B&B in Niagara on the Lake has three bedrooms. Each has a guest capacity of two.
What kinds of rooms do you offer?
The Chardonnay room offers a private en-suite and a sitting area where you can relax as you read or sip your wine next to the electric fireplace. A billowing chiffon canopy queen size bed with embroidered cotton 400-thread sheets and a vintage rose patterned feather duvet will surely bring out the romance. The soothing green walls of the Beaujolais room help highlight the elegant dark coloured queen sleigh bed complete with feather duvet and embroidered luxury cotton sheets. The en-suite has soft fluffy towels. On those chilly days you can relax in our burgundy recliner, as you toast your feet in front of the gas fireplace. The large sliding widow features a view of historic One Mile Creek. The Bordeaux room features a massive black four poster queen size bed, a sitting area and a four piece en-suite with single person Jacuzzi. As you climb into bed you will be surrounded by soft gold coloured walls and your body will be caressed by tan Egyptian cotton sheets and warmed by a feather duvet.
