About Portugal Bed & Breakfasts
The equivalent of a bed and breakfast in Portugal is the pension as a type of lodging. Normally in the country B&B is not used as a term to describe a type of lodging. There are the residences called residencial (singular) or residenciais (plural), which do not serve meals and correspond to a guest house. And there are the pensions called pensao (singular) or pensoes (plural), which are private homes, serving meals to guests, which is the closest to a bed and breakfast. Both types of lodging are family run accommodations located in the private home of the owner. In the big cities bed and breakfast accommodations are centrally located in old restored buildings. In the countryside bed and breakfasts are in small manor houses, farm houses, cottages or villas.
